"Dr. Zoidberg - RIP Oppo" (thetomselleck)

My evaluation... I received extremely positive feedback from my boss. It was probably not even a minute of his thoughts (goals, last year’s eval, feedback, etc.) then as always he kicks it to me: “What do you want to talk about?”
Here’s my opportunity to turn over a leaf. To say everything’s great and I want to continue to improve. To keep my mouth shut and be a company man.
Naturally, I did the opposite.
I told him my frustrations with the coworkers who are perpetually enabled assholes and the rest of us are expected to grin and bear, because “that’s just how they are.” I shared my displeasure with increased responsibilities and hours while earning less. I told him when I design or sell anything, my faith the job will go smoothly is the lowest it’s ever been. I’ve worked here almost a decade. My eyes do not deceive me.
When that was all over, he looked like someone had ran over his dog. I usually slather my criticisms with little sprinkles of positivity. But this was all just... Just the truth about 2019. I almost... Almost... Feel bad. He’s been feeling the challenges of this year as hard as anyone else. He’s an effective leader.
But he leads but one department, and for no good reason, inter-department “synergy” is often terrible which makes the company grossly inefficient. Ultimately, the client suffers. Then subsequently, the company as a whole. The building is plagued with people who do n’t see the big picture. I bet if they had to look a customer right in the face like I do every day, they might care a little more.
I don’t know what the endgame is for me here. The job affords me my partial sunset views and expensive-to-maintain Paseo wagons. It’s a good gig. It has numerous perks that are difficult to replicate, especially after as long I’ve worked there. But there is so little I ultimately control, and I don’t feel there’s many people I can depend on there who are in incredibly vital positions that dictate the success of my jobs and health of my accounts.
I’m not feeling great about 2020... I don’t want to, but it’s getting closer and closer to considering a career beyond male escorting.
Thanks for reading.

I feel you. I recently moved to a new department based on strong recommendation from a couple of people, and I hate it. I’m an engineer with a background in R&D and testing. I like having a job where I do things, and that’s what I had. The people pushing me into the new position made little mention that it’s a design & release job. D&R is pushing paper, babysitting suppliers, and checking boxes and not doing any tangible work. And I’m screwed because my old position is back filled so I can’t go back to what I was doing. My only option is to leave.

That’s awful. And I’m always worried about leaving for greener grass, because as the saying goes....
Also, I once posted that I was targeted by a boss in another department via retaliation for recommending one of his underlings take an open position in our department. Check in with the guy who left today? He said it’s the best decision he’s made since working here. The irony? His replacement leaves something to be desired and it's fucking up my jobs lol

You sound like a fantastic employee. And that can cut both ways. If you have quality management, you're fine. If not, they're looking for ways to cover their ass. The best thing to do is to write everything down after the meeting or during the meeting.

Free advice, worth what you paid for it: worry about things you can control. You’re not paid to worry about the big picture - unless you’re an owner or senior management. You can control where you work - if you are seeing the writing on the wall it’s time to look
for
other employment or strike out on your own
.
I would say there’s nothing inaccurate in what you said, but it may be better to continuously gripe rather than save it for review time (where your entirely valid concerns could screw up your raise or bonus)
. It sounds like you have a good boss, so it’s probably ok, but it may be better to just have a catch-up meeting every couple of weeks to go over concerns and have the “everything’s great other than what I told you last week
” review
.

We may or may not have off-site pow-wows often so as not violate company policy... Bitching on the clock has its dangers. He was not unaware of this beforehand but he was hoping most of these problems would have improved since originally identified months and months ago.

Yeah, plus a career change during an upcoming recession... Going to the bottom of the totem pole somewhere else? That's scary. Especially if you're opting for a higher starting salary. Instant savings, just lay off the new guy!

Ugh, that sucks. I am a big fan of just checking in weekly with the boss man just so my pain points are obvious, but that’s hard to do if your company is dead set against it. But it doesn’t take a lot of time - if you can distill it to a 5 minute phone call I don’t think anyone would notice. I wouldn’t waste any mental energy on your jerk co-workers, just rig the system so that you never have to work with them. If they are actually lazy and entitled you can make this happen with some creative planning.

I feel your pain man.
I’ve been with the same firm since I graduated from school. I’ve worked my way through 5 positions, and for the past couple of years have enjoyed by far the best title and salary I could have imagined. And lately, I loathe it. Workload doubles with zero adjustment to title or salary , bitched at by multiple bosses who seem incapable of seeing the big picture (my projects are well-received by VP level types, but middle managers nitpick any perceived slight ), no credit for things I do right where any small glitch is the end of the world. It’s Office Space on steroids. A few months ago I seriously thought about simply walking out the door, but the benefits are too good to abandon. If I hadn’t got back into hockey at the beginning of the year , I don’t know how I’d be able to function , it’s what keeps me going. Possible midlife crisis combined with workplace shitshow is no fun.
Maybe a hobby could help you, too.

I’ve got the inverse of that problem . I’ve got the job I love, but the field (and the university) doesn’t pay shit. I’m looking to do something I like less for more money.

I got into coaching the local high school and middle school mountain bike team. “ Oh sorry I have to leave earlier today I have to go ride bikes with kids!” It’s fun but the work never stops...

The problem is that the long-term alternative is I have to find a spouse with a great paying job. I haven’t had much luck in that department. I’d make a fantastic Mr. Mom, though.

Mountain bike team, that’s cool, never had anything like that back in my day. I’ve been told I might work well coaching little kids, as I (intentionally ) act goofy when I fall, and more than once kids have ran domly approached me at public skates with odd questions. Maybe sometime, but anything involving kids can get political if parents aren’t kept some distance.
I’m on the ice 3x a week for most of the rest of the year, and that will probably be my saving grace.

I'm in a similar kind of spot, I'm getting bored with my current job, there's not really anywhere to go with my current company, but I don't really have any qualifications for much better and the benefits are really good so I'm pretty much stuck and very frustrated with it.
